What to Wear for Family Photos

Colour palettes, textures and the one thing we always recommend avoiding.

Family walking along the shore toward the waves

Colour palettes, textures and the one thing we always recommend avoiding.

Start with the light

In the Maldives the light changes quickly. The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give soft, directional light that flatters skin and turns the lagoon into glass. Midday light is harsh, so we plan shade, reflectors or interiors for those hours.

The best photographs happen when people forget the camera is there.

Plan the timeline, then let it breathe

A good timeline has space in it. We build in buffer time for transfers, wind, tides and the moments nobody can schedule: a grandmother’s laugh, a child running into the water.

Our checklist

Confirm sunset time and tide charts; agree a rain plan; share a list of must-have family groupings; and arrange a quiet ten minutes alone together, which is often where the most honest images come from.

Most of all, trust the process. Your job is to be present. Ours is to notice.
